Star-Studded Shakespeare: Mansai Nomura and Goro Inagaki to Share the Stage in Upcoming Production of 'The Tempest'
A new staging of William Shakespeare's late romance masterpiece The Tempest has been announced for February 2027 as part of Bunkamura Production's "DISCOVER WORLD THEATRE vol.18." Directed by acclaimed British director Simon Godwin, the production marks the monumental first collaboration between renowned Kyogen master Mansai Nomura and popular actor Goro Inagaki. The unveiling of this stellar cast has already sparked widespread excitement and anticipation across social media.
Mansai Nomura will portray Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan stranded on an isolated island, while Goro Inagaki takes on the role of Ariel, the airy spirit bound in servitude to Prospero who yearns for freedom. The dynamic and mystical interplay between these two accomplished performers, each possessing an immense stage presence, is poised to be the centerpiece of the production.
Additionally, actress Mizuki Yamashita has been cast as Prospero's daughter, Miranda. This role marks Yamashita's very first foray into Shakespeare, a longtime dream she had previously voiced publicly. Following the announcement, fans rushed online with celebratory messages, cheering, "Congratulations on finally landing a Shakespeare role!" and expressing pride in her continued artistic milestones. The ensemble is further bolstered by seasoned talents including Shota Matsushima, Takafumi Imai, Reo Tamaoki, and Tokuma Nishioka.
The production will run in Tokyo at THEATER MILANO-Za from February 24 to March 15, 2027, followed by a domestic tour visiting Toyama and Osaka. Online reactions have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic, with comments such as "Chills just thinking about Nomura and Inagaki sharing the stage," "Getting tickets will definitely be a bloodbath," and fans already planning trips to catch the regional performances.
The Context
Bunkamura's "DISCOVER WORLD THEATRE" series is one of Tokyo's premier international collaborative theater initiatives, regularly bringing prominent overseas directors to Japan to stage world-class dramas alongside domestic talent. The pairing of Mansai Nomura and Goro Inagaki brings together two cultural heavyweights from different theatrical traditions. Nomura is a revered Kyogen performer (a classical comic theater form closely tied to Noh) who is also celebrated for bridging traditional arts with contemporary stage and film. Inagaki, originally rising to nationwide fame as a member of the legendary pop group SMAP, has developed a prestigious reputation over the past two decades as an earnest and versatile stage actor. Complementing them is Mizuki Yamashita, a former front member of the idol group Nogizaka46 who has successfully transitioned into a critically respected actress in television and theater.
