Shock Retirement: 22-Year-Old Jockey Kota Washizu to Join Prominent Fukunaga Stable as Training Assistant
The Japan Racing Association (JRA) has announced that jockey Kota Washizu will retire from active riding as of July 31. Following his retirement, it was revealed that he will transition to a new role as a training assistant at the highly-touted stable of former star jockey Yuichi Fukunaga, which just opened this spring. The news has sparked significant buzz among horse racing fans. Washizu, 22, debuted in 2022 and belongs to the same generation of jockeys as Seina Imamura and Daisuke Sasaki. Over his career, he has recorded 34 wins in 1,034 JRA starts (including 3 wins in 36 steeplechase races). He actively competed in both flat and steeplechase races, and had even secured a victory in a recent race. The sudden announcement came just as many expected his career to truly take off.
