Japan to Realign Self-Defense Forces Ranks with International Military Standards: First Change Since 1954 Sparks Debate
The Japanese government has finalized a policy to change the rank titles of senior Self-Defense Forces (SDF) officers to align with international military conventions. This marks the first such change since the SDF’s founding in 1954. Under the proposal, the Chiefs of Staff (the top positions for the Ground, Maritime, and Air branches) will be referred to as "Generals" or "Admirals," other "Sho" (General-equivalent) ranks will become "Lieutenant Generals," and "1-sa" (First Class Colonels/Captains) will be designated as "Colonels."
