Nihon University Ace Shadrack Kipkemei Smashes Izumo Ekiden Stage Record by 40 Seconds

At the 38th Izumo All-Japan University Ekiden Championship on October 12, Nihon University's ace runner Shadrack Kipkemei delivered an out-of-this-world performance in Stage 3 (8.5 km). Overtaking eight runners along the course, he propelled his team straight to the front and shattered the previous stage record by an astonishing 40 seconds, establishing a staggering new benchmark of 22 minutes and 56 seconds.

Marking their return to the Izumo course for the first time in 16 years, Nihon University kept themselves in contention thanks to gritty runs by Amano in Stage 1 and Yamaguchi in Stage 2. Kipkemei then took the sash, determined to signal the resurgence of the inaugural Izumo champions. Charging forward at a furious pace, he reeled in his rivals one after another and seized the lead in the blink of an eye.

Stage 3 turned into an exceptionally fast-paced, high-level contest with records tumbling across the board. Teikyo University's Yoshihiro Kusuoka clocked 23:29 and Waseda University's Ryuto Suzuki posted 23:31, both surpassing the former course record, while Chuo University's Yuto Miyake tied the previous mark at 23:36. Yet, even amid this intense clash of titans, Kipkemei's speed stood in a class of its own.

In a post-race interview, Kipkemei flashed a refreshing smile and spoke directly in Japanese without an interpreter, expressing his joy by saying, "I'm very happy." When asked to send a word of encouragement to his teammates running the remaining stages, he cheekily replied, "I'll do my best!" winning over ekiden fans with his dominant performance and endearing personality. Leaving an indelible mark on the opening race of the collegiate season, Nihon University's ace is sure to be one of the most closely watched runners in the upcoming races.

The Context

The Izumo Ekiden is one of Japan's prestigious "Big Three" collegiate road relay championships, alongside the All-Japan University Ekiden and the world-famous Hakone Ekiden. Held annually in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, it serves as the curtain-raiser for the Japanese collegiate long-distance running season in the autumn. Unlike Hakone, which spans two days over long distances, Izumo features shorter, faster stages where raw speed and sudden momentum shifts often dictate the race outcome. Japanese universities frequently recruit talented international student-athletes—primarily from Kenya—who often take on pivotal stages to make dramatic, game-changing surges like Kipkemei's historic record-breaking run.
