Meta Announces 'Meta VR Glasses': An Ultra-Lightweight VR Headset Weighing Only 100g

Meta has officially announced the "Meta VR Glasses," a new ultra-lightweight VR headset featuring a glasses-like design. Weighing approximately 100g, it achieves an astonishing lightness of about one-fifth the weight of Meta's flagship model, the Meta Quest 3. The headset is scheduled for release in the spring of 2027, with an expected price tag of $1,299.99 (approximately 200,000 Japanese yen).

The device adopts a design where the processing chip and battery are separated into an external control box, while the headset itself utilizes a micro-OLED display and a magnesium alloy frame. It also includes cutting-edge features such as eye tracking, face tracking, and hand tracking, relying primarily on controller-free intuitive operation. Furthermore, the high precision of its passthrough display has received high praise, quickly gathering significant attention as a device that shatters the conventional image of heavy and bulky VR goggles.

In addition, alongside the announcement, it was revealed that "Ace Attorney 5 VR" will be released for the Meta VR Glasses and the Quest series in 2027, causing expectations on the entertainment front to skyrocket. Although there are ongoing discussions regarding the field of view and pricing, this next-generation device, which dramatically improves weight and comfort, is poised to breathe new life into the VR industry.

The context

Virtual Reality (VR) headsets have traditionally been criticized for their heavy weight and bulky designs, which often cause discomfort during extended use. By separating the heavy components like batteries and processors into an external unit, Meta's new approach mirrors trends in wearable tech aimed at achieving a true glasses-like form factor. This development represents a major milestone in making VR hardware more accessible for everyday, long-term wear.
