The Context

The Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) awards Gold Disc certifications monthly based on physical shipment figures reported by record labels. Certifications range from Gold (100,000 units) to Platinum (250,000 units), Double Platinum (500,000 units), Triple Platinum (750,000 units), and Million (1,000,000 units). In Japan's music market—where physical media like CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays continue to hold major cultural and commercial importance alongside digital streaming—these certifications serve as a primary benchmark of an artist's popularity and fanbase support.
