Japan Raises Mt. Aso Volcanic Alert to Level 3, Restricting Mountain Access
At 3:45 p.m. on the 14th, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a near-crater warning and raised the volcanic alert level for Mount Aso (Nakadake) in Kumamoto Prefecture from Level 2 (Do not approach the crater) to Level 3 (Do not approach the volcano/mountain access restricted) due to heightened volcanic activity.
According to the JMA, increased activity has been detected at Mt. Aso, including a sharp rise in the volume of volcanic gas emissions. As a result, authorities are urging vigilance against large airborne volcanic rocks and pyroclastic flows within a radius of approximately two kilometers from the Nakadake No. 1 crater.
Following the elevation of the alert level, local municipalities around the volcano—including Aso City, Minamiaso Village, and Takamori Town in Kumamoto Prefecture—have implemented entry restrictions around the crater and closed off mountain climbing routes. Local authorities and relevant agencies are strongly advising hikers, residents, and tourists to monitor the latest disaster management updates and stay well away from hazardous zones.
On social media, people have expressed concern and caution, with comments such as, "I hope no more natural disasters happen," and "I'll have to reconsider my travel and hiking plans." The JMA continues to urge the public to pay close attention to future developments in volcanic activity.

Mount Aso is one of the world's largest active volcanoes, located on the island of Kyushu in southwestern Japan. Its massive caldera encompasses several peaks, with the Nakadake crater being the most frequently active. Due to its scenic landscapes, hot springs, and accessible viewing areas, Aso is a major destination for domestic and international travelers. Japan uses a 5-level Volcanic Alert Level system; Level 3 warns individuals to avoid entering the mountain entirely, prohibiting access beyond trailheads and standard viewing zones to ensure public safety from potential eruptions, flying rocks, and toxic volcanic gas emissions.
