Iconic Japanese Bubble Wrap Manufacturer Renames Itself 'Puchi Puchi Inc.'

Kawakami Sangyo Co., Ltd., the manufacturer and seller of Japan's iconic bubble wrap known as "Puchi Puchi," announced that it will officially change its company name to "Puchi Puchi Inc." starting October 1. This marks the very first name change in the company's 58-year history since its founding in 1968, sparking widespread surprise and delight across social media.

Named after the satisfying popping sound made when deflating the air pockets, "Puchi Puchi" is a registered trademark and the company's flagship product. By adopting this widely beloved product name as its official corporate identity, the company aims to further strengthen its brand identity and expand recognition.

Following the news, "Puchi Puchi Inc." quickly trended on X (formerly Twitter). Netizens showered the decision with praise, leaving comments such as "It's so clear and straightforward—brilliant branding!" Others were captivated by the charm of the new name, posting, "I feel warm just imagining someone answering the office phone with 'Hello, this is Puchi Puchi Inc.,'" and "I wish I could write that name on my resume!"

The Context

In Japan, the term "Puchi Puchi" is virtually synonymous with bubble wrap, much like "Kleenex" is used for facial tissues or "Band-Aid" for adhesive bandages in English-speaking countries. Although protective bubble packaging was originally invented in the United States, Kawakami Sangyo popularized and trademarked the name "Puchi Puchi" in Japan, eventually dominating over 50% of the domestic market. Japanese culture has a strong affection for onomatopoeic words (words that imitate sounds), which contributed greatly to making "Puchi Puchi" a household name and explains why this whimsical corporate renaming has resonated so warmly with the Japanese public.
