Resident Evil Requiem Unleashes "LEON MUST DIE FOREVER" in Major Free Update

On May 8, Capcom released a free update for the latest installment in their iconic survival horror franchise, Resident Evil Requiem. The highlight of this update is a new Extra Game mode titled "LEON MUST DIE FOREVER," which becomes available after completing the main story. It has already become a major talking point among the community.

The newly implemented "LEON MUST DIE FOREVER" is a high-tempo action mode where players must clear stages and eliminate bosses within a strict time limit. Its most distinctive feature is the ability for the protagonist, Leon S. Kennedy, to fight while unlocking various "cheat abilities." This marks a departure from the series' traditional focus on "survival in desperate situations," instead prioritizing the catharsis of mowing down hordes of enemies with overwhelming power.

On social media, fans have reacted with a mix of surprise and excitement, particularly noting the intense title and playful in-game descriptions such as "Grace has already gone home." Comments like "The phrasing is so aggressive" and "The name alone sounds insane" have flooded the community. Hardcore fans have also pointed out that the naming convention pays homage to previous difficulty settings like "Dante Must Die" (from the Devil May Cry series) and "Ethan Must Die," with some seeing it as a nod to classic over-the-top action cinema.

In addition to the new game mode, the update introduces four "joke" costumes and adds support for the DualSense wireless controller's adaptive triggers and haptic feedback on the PC (Steam/Epic Games Store) versions. Furthermore, Capcom announced a lineup of official apparel featuring designs from the game, as well as Leon and Grace amiibo set for release on July 30, expanding the title's presence beyond the screen.

This sudden and substantial free update has ignited fresh enthusiasm following the Golden Week holiday in Japan, with players eager to dive in. "I want to start grinding immediately," and "I'm looking forward to those otherworldly powers," are just some of the sentiments being shared by the energized player base.

The context

Resident Evil, known as Biohazard in Japan, is one of the most successful survival horror franchises in video game history. Developed by Capcom, the series originally focused on resource management and puzzle-solving in claustrophobic environments. Over time, it has evolved to include more action-oriented spin-offs and "Extra Games"—side modes like "The Mercenaries" that focus on combat rather than story. The "Must Die" nomenclature is a recurring Capcom staple, originating from the "Dante Must Die" difficulty in Devil May Cry, which signifies an extreme level of challenge. In this update, the name is used with a touch of irony, as Leon is given "cheat-like" abilities to counter the difficulty, leaning into a more arcade-style experience.
