Japan's Leading Bento Chain Hotto Motto Launches Massive 'Monster Strike' Collaboration and New Summer Menu

Hotto Motto, Japan’s largest takeout bento chain, has announced a large-scale collaboration project with the popular smartphone game Monster Strike (Monst), titled ‘Cho Hotto Motto Sai’ (The Super Hotto Motto Festival), set to begin on June 1st. Fans are already buzzing with anticipation over the news.

As part of this collaboration, customers who spend 800 yen or more (including tax) will receive a limited-edition hologram card on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, a lottery for exclusive merchandise will be held for members of the ‘My HottoMotto’ loyalty program. Social media platforms are filled with eager comments, such as ‘I’m curious about the card variations’ and ‘I have to get my hands on these.’

Beyond the collaboration, the chain’s new menu items are also drawing significant attention. Hotto Motto has introduced the ‘Imabari Yakibuta Tamago Meshi,’ a recreation of a local specialty from Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. Users have posted enthusiastic reviews, saying they want to ‘compare it to the authentic taste’ and that ‘the combination of roasted pork and egg is irresistible.’ Other trend-conscious additions like Taiwan Mazesoba (soupless noodles) and Cheese Malatang Bento are also generating talk among spice lovers and younger demographics.

Discussions regarding classic menu items are also lively on social media. In particular, the ‘Chicken Nanban Bento’ has surprised some fans who weren’t aware of the existence of two different styles: the standard version and the ‘Kyushu Chicken Nanban.’ Meanwhile, the fried chicken (Karaage) bento continues to receive strong support for its consistent value. However, some users have voiced earnest concerns regarding recent price adjustments and the need to maintain service quality.

Hotto Motto is also targeting a broad customer base through initiatives like the ‘Keiro (Respect for the Aged) Fair,’ which offers point incentives for senior citizens. Armed with both trending new products and a major collaboration, the company looks set to energize the bento market heading into early summer.

The Context: Japan's Bento Culture and the Power of Collaborations

Hotto Motto is a household name in Japan, specializing in freshly made ‘hoka-hoka’ (piping hot) takeout meals. In a country where the bento culture is deeply rooted in daily life, these chains provide a convenient and affordable alternative to home cooking or convenience store meals. Monster Strike, the collaboration partner, is one of Japan’s most successful mobile games, known for its frequent tie-ins with popular anime and brands. By combining a staple food provider with a gaming giant, Hotto Motto aims to drive foot traffic from the younger ‘gamer’ demographic while simultaneously introducing regional Japanese delicacies like Imabari’s pork and egg rice to a national audience.
