"Detective Precure" Collab: Minami Takayama’s Clever Nod to Her "Dark" Past Sends Fans Wild

With the announcement of "Detective Precure!", a dream collaboration between the hit anime series Detective Conan (also known as Case Closed) and the Pretty Cure (Precure) franchise, voice actress Minami Takayama—who voices the protagonist Conan Edogawa—has taken social media by storm with her comment on the project.

In her official statement published on the collaboration's website, Takayama teasingly remarked, "I’ve actually been a Precure myself in the past (though a dark one)." This is a direct reference to her role 16 years ago in the 2010 series HeartCatch PreCure!, where she voiced the rival character, Dark Precure. This self-homage sent longtime fans into a frenzy online, with comments like, "Hearing the name 'Dark Precure' come straight from her is giving me goosebumps," and "It brings back memories of her god-tier ability to voice completely different characters."

Fans were also charmed by her playful speculation: "Is Ran-neechan going to transform!?" leading to praises like "She's so adorable!" and "It’s wonderful to see her enjoying this just as much as the fans." The historic crossover also features other star-studded cast members with ties to the Precure franchise, including Rikiya Koyama (who voices Kogoro Mouri and appeared in Fresh Pretty Cure!) and Akemi Okamura (who voices Ran Mouri and appeared in Power of Hope: Pretty Cure Full Bloom). Fans are highly anticipating the project, calling it a "miraculous crossover bridging the Heisei and Reiwa eras."

As a legendary voice actress who has defined Conan’s career, voiced protagonists in numerous masterpiece anime, and even found success as a musical artist, Minami Takayama’s humorous touch has made this historic collaboration even more exciting for fans.

The Context

Detective Conan is one of Japan's most enduring and popular anime series, airing continuously since 1996. Meanwhile, the Pretty Cure series is a massive magical girl franchise produced by Toei Animation that has been running since 2004. Crossovers between these two massive anime powerhouses are extremely rare, making the "Detective Precure!" announcement a major event for anime fans. Minami Takayama, the voice of Conan, is an industry legend who also voiced Dark Precure—a tragic antagonist in HeartCatch PreCure!—making her unique connection to both franchises a delightful easter egg for fans of both series.
