Seibu Railway Unveils 'Tokiiro': A Stylish New Limited Express Set to Transform Shinjuku Line Travel in 2027
Seibu Railway has announced that it will introduce a new train, the "Tokiiro," on its Shinjuku Line starting in spring 2027, thereby revamping its paid seating service. This new train is named "Tokiiro," meaning "color of time," based on the concept of adding color to daily moments.
As a first for Seibu Railway, the train's design features a wave gradient on its sides, inspired by the colors of the sky from morning to evening. It is anticipated to be affectionately known by nicknames such as "Morning Glow Face" and "Sunset Glow Face." This meticulously crafted design has been unveiled on a dedicated website, and its futuristic appearance has garnered high praise on social media, with comments calling it "cool" and "stylish."
The "Tokiiro" will be an 8-car train based on Seibu Railway's 40000 series, featuring LC (Long-Cross) seats designed to support comfortable travel. This means that when used for the paid seating service, seats will function as reclinable cross-seats, and during regular commute times, they will operate as side-facing long-seats. However, some voices express concerns about a "downgrade feeling" compared to the reclining seats of the conventional Red Arrow, and opinions have been raised regarding the ride comfort of the 40000 series' convertible cross-seats. Furthermore, with an 8-car formation resulting in fewer seats than the NRA (New Red Arrow), operational concerns have emerged regarding the claim of "expanding seating opportunities."
This introduction is strongly seen as the successor to the Limited Express Red Arrow, which has long served the Shinjuku Line. In preparation for its launch, platform extension work is underway at Hon-Kawagoe Station, with speculation that this is to accommodate the "Tokiiro." Regarding stopping stations, predictions suggest that stations like Tanashi and Shin-Tokorozawa may be added to the current Koedo limited express stops, anticipating improved convenience. Users commuting with children have also expressed welcoming sentiments, stating that "commuting with kids seems like it will become easier."
Through the "Tokiiro," Seibu Railway aims to provide a more comfortable and appealing rail service, enriching the daily "moments" of its passengers.
The context
Seibu Railway is one of Japan's major private railway companies, primarily operating in Tokyo and Saitama Prefecture. The Shinjuku Line is one of its key routes, connecting Seibu Shinjuku Station in central Tokyo to Hon-Kawagoe in Saitama. Limited Express (Tokkyu) trains in Japan are premium services that make fewer stops than local trains, offering faster travel and often requiring a special surcharge in addition to the basic fare for reserved seating. The "Red Arrow" (or New Red Arrow, NRA) has been Seibu's long-standing limited express service, known for its comfortable, dedicated reclining seats. The introduction of the "Tokiiro" signifies a significant upgrade and replacement of this iconic service, with a focus on modern design and flexible seating to cater to both premium commuters and everyday passengers.
