A newly introduced "Account Location" display feature on the SNS platform X (formerly Twitter) has become a major topic of discussion among users. This feature allows users to view an account's location (country or region) and connection source (device or app used) directly from its profile. While this has raised expectations for increased transparency in information dissemination, it has also led to questions and confusion regarding the displayed information.

The new feature works by allowing users to access another account's profile page and click on an item such as "About this account." This will display the country or region where the account was registered or from which it is primarily connected. Users are reportedly able to choose to display the location by region/continent or by country. However, many users are also puzzled by their own location displays. Reports have been flooding in stating, "It shows 'United States' even though I'm in Japan" and "It says 'East Asia & Pacific,' which is mysterious." The instance of a public broadcaster's account showing "United States" has also drawn attention. Possible reasons speculated include VPN usage, cloud service usage, or issues with X's system display specifications. Furthermore, the view has been shared that "account location is often based on the country of registration or App Store, and may not always match actual residency."

Cases where the connection source differs from the account location have also been reported, suggesting a complex interplay of various factors such as the use of Tor networks, VPNs, and the combined use of smartphone apps and web browsers. Examples include displaying information about a country accessed during travel or the possibility of information from previously connected countries remaining.
