Shinjiro Koizumi Faces Backlash Over Alleged Stealth Marketing, Calls for Withdrawal from LDP Leadership Race Flood Social Media

Suspicions of stealth marketing (astroturfing) instructions by Shinjiro Koizumi's camp have emerged in connection with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) presidential election, leading to a deluge of calls on social media for his withdrawal from the race. On the internet, 'Withdraw' (辞退して) has become a trending topic, spreading strong public distrust.

This alleged astroturfing issue, reportedly covered by Shukan Josei PRIME and Yahoo! News, involves suspicions that Koizumi's camp directed fake posts praising him with phrases like 'Shinjiro Mansei' (Long Live Shinjiro) and slandering other candidates with comments such as 'Don't lose to fake business conservatives,' all in an attempt to manipulate public opinion in their favor. In response, many citizens are vehemently protesting, stating that it 'distorted a free and healthy space for public discourse.'

On X (formerly Twitter), numerous comments point out that Koizumi's Instagram comment section is 'flooded with demands to withdraw.' Harsh opinions dominate, such as 'I want him to take responsibility and withdraw,' 'Such an idiot cannot possibly steer Japan,' and 'Please spare Japan from being dragged into this.' Some voices even implore his wife, Christel Takigawa, to ask him to withdraw, while others raise concerns about the involvement of a former Digital Minister.

Even regarding Koizumi's alleged apology, 'What has happened cannot be helped, and the ultimate responsibility lies with me,' strong criticisms of his stance have emerged: 'You're the one who did it!' and 'If you genuinely want to accept criticism, don't close your comment sections on X and YouTube.' Furthermore, policy-related concerns have been voiced, with statements like 'If he's going to sell off Japanese agriculture to other countries, I want him to withdraw from the presidential election.'

Many posts feature despairing phrases like 'Japan's future is dark' and 'No hope for the future,' highlighting how this issue transcends mere election violations and is further deepening public distrust in politics. The possibility of LDP party rule violations in the presidential election has also been raised, and attention is now focused on future developments.

The context

Shinjiro Koizumi is a prominent figure in Japanese politics, the son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. He is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and has served in various key roles, including Minister of the Environment. Often seen as a potential future leader, his political career has been closely watched. The LDP presidential election is an internal party contest to choose the party leader. Since the LDP is currently the ruling party, the winner of this election typically becomes the Prime Minister of Japan.

Stealth marketing, or astroturfing, in this context, refers to the practice of creating fake grassroots support or manipulating public opinion online without disclosing the true source or intent. In political campaigns, this involves covertly promoting one candidate while disparaging others through seemingly independent social media accounts or comments. Such activities are considered highly unethical and potentially illegal, as they undermine the transparency and fairness of democratic processes and erode public trust in political discourse and institutions.
