Motorola Unveils Razr 60 Series Foldable Smartphones with Latest AI in Japan, Featuring Buzzworthy CM with Snow Man's Ren Meguro

Motorola Mobility Japan has announced the domestic release of its latest AI-equipped foldable smartphones, the "motorola razr 60" and the flagship model "motorola razr 60 ultra." These devices are expected to bring a fresh impetus to the smartphone market.

The "motorola razr 60" will be released on October 10th and will be available through major carriers and MVNOs such as SoftBank, NTT Docomo, IIJmio, and HIS. The "motorola razr 60 ultra," on the other hand, is scheduled to be released by au from mid-December 2025 onwards. Key features of these new models include the advanced "moto ai," a large external display, enhanced durability with a titanium hinge plate, dust resistance, and support for the highly anticipated Osaifu-Keitai mobile payment function for Japanese users.

Coinciding with this announcement, a new TV commercial titled "Goodbye Traffic Jam" featuring Ren Meguro of Snow Man was also released. On social media, the new commercial has received widespread praise, with comments such as "excellent taste," "a wonderful fusion of sci-fi and retro," and "has a cyberpunk feel." Furthermore, Ren Meguro's "energetic and cute" appearance and the "Mini REN-kun" character in the commercial have garnered significant attention from fans. It has been a year since Ren Meguro became Motorola's ambassador, and the continuation of his appointment has also been well-received.

Meanwhile, some existing Motorola users have voiced concerns, such as subtle incoming call notifications and unclear vibration settings for silent mode, indicating a desire for future improvements. However, the existing model, the "Motorola g66j 5G," has received high praise for its "smooth operation," "beautiful photos," and "waterproofing, allowing use even in the bath."

While Motorola is a brand with American roots, its smartphone business is currently under the umbrella of China's Lenovo. It does not have its own OS, instead featuring a simple interface based on Android. As the foldable smartphone market expands, the future presence of Motorola's new series will be closely watched.

The Context

For readers unfamiliar with the Japanese market:

  • Snow Man and Ren Meguro: Snow Man is one of Japan's most popular male idol groups, affiliated with Johnny & Associates (now STARTO ENTERTAINMENT). Ren Meguro is a prominent member, known for his acting, modeling, and variety show appearances. His endorsements typically generate significant public and fan engagement.
  • Osaifu-Keitai: This refers to Japan's unique mobile payment system, primarily utilizing FeliCa technology. It's widely used for public transportation (like Suica or Pasmo cards), convenience store purchases, and other daily transactions. Its inclusion is often a crucial feature for smartphones targeting the Japanese market.
  • MVNOs and Major Carriers: NTT Docomo, SoftBank, and au are Japan's three major mobile network operators. IIJmio and HIS Mobile are examples of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) that offer more affordable plans by using the infrastructure of the major carriers.
  • Motorola's Brand Identity: Although Motorola has a legacy as an American telecommunications company, its smartphone division is now owned by the Chinese multinational technology company Lenovo. Motorola smartphones typically run a near-stock version of Android, offering a cleaner user experience compared to brands that heavily customize the OS.
