Newly Launched 'GV/SL Gunma Yokokawa' Tourist Train Suffers Breakdown on First Day of Service

The tourist train "GV/SL Gunma Yokokawa," which had just begun service on July 19, experienced a vehicle breakdown on the morning of the same day, leading to the suspension of service on the Shin'etsu Main Line between Annaka and Yokokawa.

According to JR East's Takasaki Branch, it was announced that "due to the vehicle breakdown, the GV/SL Gunma Yokokawa train service between Annaka and Yokokawa, and the SL/GV Gunma Yokokawa train service between Yokokawa and Takasaki have been canceled." Passengers at Annaka Station were asked to disembark and were busy making alternative arrangements, such as transferring to local trains returning towards Takasaki.

Posts on social media indicate that the breakdown likely occurred in the D51 498 steam locomotive, which was pulling the train. Numerous eyewitness accounts reported issues such as "unreleased brakes" (a state where brakes are not disengaged, preventing the driving wheels from rotating) immediately after departing Takasaki Station, "obvious strange noises," and "dragging the D51 498."

The "GV/SL Gunma Yokokawa" had garnered attention as a new initiative, where GV-E197 series diesel railcars would couple with and operate the steam locomotive, replacing conventional electric or diesel locomotive traction. On its inaugural day, July 19, the Governor of Gunma Prefecture also attended the departure ceremony at Takasaki Station, with high hopes placed on the train for regional tourism promotion. This trouble occurred right at the outset of those expectations.

Concerns are growing over the overall operational system for "SL Gunma" services this summer, as the malfunction of the D51 498 locomotive could potentially lead to a long period of "hospitalization" (out of service for repairs), compounding issues with the C61 20 locomotive already undergoing inspection. Attention is now focused on the recovery status and the impact on future operating schedules.

The Context

"SL Gunma" refers to a popular series of tourist trains operated by JR East, primarily in Gunma Prefecture, renowned for featuring authentic steam locomotives. These trains are a significant tourist attraction, offering passengers a nostalgic journey and a rare chance to experience steam-powered rail travel. The D51 498 and C61 20 are two of JR East's prominent preserved steam locomotives, cherished by railway enthusiasts and the public alike. The new "GV/SL Gunma Yokokawa" service was particularly innovative because it paired a traditional steam locomotive with modern GV-E197 series diesel railcars.
