Pokémon GO Partners with Japan AED Foundation to Turn 13,000 Life-Saving Locations into PokéStops
Pokémon GO and the Japan AED Foundation have officially entered into a partnership to promote the awareness and accessibility of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Starting May 1, 2024, AED installation sites are being sequentially added to the game as "PokéStops."
The initiative aims to utilize the game’s popularity to help the public identify the locations of AEDs, which are critical in medical emergencies. The rollout began with approximately 1,000 locations in Tokyo and is scheduled to expand to about 13,000 sites nationwide by mid-July. To further emphasize the lifesaving theme, Pawmot—the "Hands-on Pokémon" known for its resuscitation-themed moves—is featured as a primary motif for the collaboration.
The announcement has been met with widespread acclaim on social media, with many calling it a "revolutionary" and "wonderful social contribution." Experts hope that by having a wide demographic of daily players recognize where AEDs are located, survival rates during cardiac emergencies will improve. At the same time, some users have expressed a need for caution regarding AEDs located inside private facilities and have used the buzz to request UI fixes and inventory expansions within the game.
This collaboration follows previous successful efforts by the game to integrate with social infrastructure, such as its partnership with blood donation centers. This move toward "life-saving entertainment" is drawing significant attention as a new way for digital games to provide tangible social value.
The context
Japan has one of the highest densities of AEDs in the world, yet the survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest remains a challenge because many people do not know where the nearest device is when an emergency occurs. The Japan AED Foundation is a public interest organization dedicated to making Japan a world leader in cardiac safety. By integrating these locations into Pokémon GO—a game that encourages physical exploration—Niantic and the Foundation are effectively creating a mental map of emergency equipment for millions of players, ensuring they subconsciously learn the locations of life-saving tools during their regular gameplay.
