Samurai Japan Announces Initial 2026 WBC Roster Additions, Sosuke Genda Returns for Second Straight Tournament

Japan's national baseball team, 'Samurai Japan,' announced on the 16th an additional 11 players for the '2026 WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC™,' which kicks off on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Among them is Saitama Seibu Lions infielder Sosuke Genda, a remarkable achievement as he earns his selection for a second consecutive tournament, drawing significant attention from baseball fans.

The newly announced additional members include prominent players from Japan's professional baseball league: Pitchers Tomoyuki Sugano (FA) and Yuki Matsumoto (SoftBank); Catchers Kenya Wakatsuki (Orix) and Seishiro Sakamoto (Hanshin); Infielders Shugo Maki (DeNA), Taisei Makihara (SoftBank), Sosuke Genda (Seibu), and Teruaki Sato (Hanshin); and Outfielders Kensuke Kondo (SoftBank), Ukyo Shuto (SoftBank), and Shota Morishita (Hanshin).

Genda's selection marks his second consecutive appearance in the tournament, and his defensive prowess is highly praised, with many calling him 'Japan's top defender.' In the previous WBC, he famously contributed to the team's championship victory despite playing with a broken finger, and manager Hideki Iba expresses high expectations for his selection. Genda himself released a powerful statement, saying, 'I will not forget the responsibility of bearing the Hinomaru (Japanese flag) and will fight with all my might for Japan.'
