Niigata Candidate's Snow-Shoveling Video Goes Viral, Igniting Heated Debate

Ryuichi Yoneyama, a candidate from the Centrist Reform Alliance running in Niigata's 4th House of Representatives district, caused a major stir on January 28th. A video of him shoveling snow from the roadside back onto the street for his outdoor campaign speech went viral on social media.

Yoneyama had posted, "Day two of the election campaign, a morning thought. I'll do my best today too!" The video shows him personally using a shovel to clear snow from the shoulder and push it onto the road. This action drew strong criticism online, with many comments stating, "This may violate Article 43 of the Road Act and Article 76 of the Road Traffic Act," "It's a nuisance," "Self-centered," and "He's trash, not just as a prospective Diet member, but as a human being."

In particular, concerns were raised that by returning snow to the road, melted water could freeze overnight, forming "black ice" and potentially leading to dangerous slip accidents. Critics harshly questioned, "Did you think it was okay for someone to get into an accident just for your speech?"

Conversely, some individuals from snowy regions offered a different perspective. A few supportive comments emerged, such as, "For someone from a snowy region, it's like, 'Yeah, that's what you do,'" and "Spreading snow onto dry asphalt to expose the shoulder makes it melt faster overall. This is everyday life in Niigata." It was also noted that the road surface at the speech location had snow-melting pipes installed, suggesting the snow would have easily disappeared. However, even among these supportive comments, criticisms directed at Yoneyama personally and complex sentiments like, "I want Ryuichi Yoneyama to lose, but..." were observed.

Yoneyama, who previously resigned as Niigata Prefectural Governor in 2018, saw his latest action fuel further debate on social media, with terms like "Block Daimaō" (Great King of Blocking) and "crazy person" being used. The impact on his election campaign is now a focus of attention.
