Tropical Depression Near Okinawa Expected to Intensify into Typhoon Lanlan (No. 12) Tonight

A tropical depression located south-southeast of Miyakojima, an island south of Okinawa Prefecture, is expected to develop into Typhoon No. 12 as early as tonight. The next typhoon to form will be named "Lanlan," according to announcements from various meteorological agencies.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), this tropical depression is projected to move northward west of Okinawa Main Island and proceed into the East China Sea. While it is not currently expected to develop significantly, some forecasts indicate a possibility of it approaching the Kyushu region over the weekend. Furthermore, there are suggestions of it potentially heading towards Taiwan or passing through the Tsushima Strait, making continued vigilance regarding its future path essential.

Should Typhoon No. 12 form, maximum sustained winds are expected to reach approximately 15 meters per second (approx. 54 km/h or 34 mph), with maximum gusts of around 23 meters per second (approx. 83 km/h or 51 mph). This could bring localized heavy rain and strong winds even to areas distant from the center. Concerns are also raised about potential impacts on travel and weekend plans, including possible disruptions to air traffic.

Meteorological officials are urging the public to check the latest information on the typhoon's movement and make early preparations.

Miyakojima is an island belonging to Okinawa Prefecture, located in the southernmost part of Japan. Okinawa Main Island is the largest island in Okinawa. Kyushu is one of Japan's four main islands, located to the north of Okinawa. The East China Sea is a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean, west of Japan. The Tsushima Strait is a narrow channel separating Japan and South Korea.

Typhoons are tropical cyclones that form in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. They are assigned names from a rotating list by the Typhoon Committee, a joint body of countries and regions in Asia. "Lanlan" is one such name on this list.
