Racehorse Prognosis, GII Champion and G1 Contender, Retires to Stud

It has been announced that racehorse Prognosis (7-year-old male), who secured three victories in GII races and competed actively in G1 races both domestically and internationally, is retiring from racing and will enter stud. According to the Shadai Thoroughbred Club, his retirement was decided after an examination to assess his racing ability revealed inflammation in part of a sesamoid ligament.

Prognosis debuted as a highly anticipated colt, boasting a distinguished pedigree as a son of Deep Impact out of the mare Tiara. In GII races, he made a name for himself as a formidable middle-distance runner, achieving back-to-back victories in the Kinko Sho in 2023 and 2024, in addition to winning the Sapporo Kinen in 2023. However, he narrowly missed securing a G1 title, frequently finishing as a close runner-up. He placed second four times in G1 races, all of which were overseas, including consecutive second-place finishes in the Hong Kong Cup, earning him the moniker 'unlucky genius' due to his string of narrow defeats.

In response to the news of his retirement, trainer Mitsumasa Nakauchida commented, "I truly believe he gave his best efforts." On social media, many fans expressed their sentiments, with comments such as, "It's sad to see him retire, but I'm glad he's going to stud," "It's a shame he couldn't win a G1, but I wish him a healthy new life as a stallion," and "I have high hopes for him as a successor to Deep Impact."

Although the dream of a G1 victory remained unfulfilled, Prognosis's exceptional talent, consistent performance, and his lineage as a son of Deep Impact generate significant expectations for his success as a stallion. We eagerly await the day when Prognosis's bloodline produces future champion horses.

In horse racing, G1 (Grade 1) and GII (Grade 2) refer to graded stakes races, with G1 being the highest level of competition. Deep Impact, Prognosis's sire, was a legendary Japanese racehorse, a multiple G1 winner, and one of the most successful sires in modern racing history, making Prognosis's lineage highly significant.
