Fumi Yoshinaga's Masterpiece Manga "Ooku" to be Adapted into Stage Play by Takarazuka Revue

It has been announced that Fumi Yoshinaga's masterpiece manga Ooku: The Inner Chambers will be adapted into a stage production by the Takarazuka Revue's Star Troupe. The show is scheduled to run from February to March 2027 at the Tokyo International Forum and the Umeda Arts Theater Main Hall in Osaka.

The adaptation will focus on the immensely popular "Arikoto & Iemitsu Arc" from the original manga. Set in a gender-swapped Ooku, the painful yet poignant love story will be brought to life through the glamorous world of Takarazuka. Yuka Kurita will direct the production, with Star Troupe's Chisei Akatsuki starring as Madenokoji Arikoto alongside Chizuru Uta as Tokugawa Iemitsu.

Following the announcement, fans of both the original manga and Takarazuka flooded social media with excitement, posting comments such as "Takarazuka and Ooku are a match made in heaven!" and "I have high expectations for both the directing and the cast!" Ooku: The Inner Chambers is an acclaimed manga series by Fumi Yoshinaga depicting an alternate Edo-period Japan where a mystery plague decimates the male population, creating a matriarchal society where women rule and men populate the Shogun's harem (the Ooku). The Takarazuka Revue is an all-female Japanese musical theater company where actresses play all roles, including male roles (otokoyaku). Given Takarazuka's unique tradition of women playing male roles and its grand aesthetic, this adaptation of a gender-swapped historical romance is eagerly anticipated by theater lovers.
