Tragic Tank Accident Claims Lives of JGSDF Soldiers at Hijudai Maneuver Ground

On April 21, 2026, around 8:40 a.m., the Hita-Kusu Regional Fire Department received a distress call reporting a tank explosion at the Hijudai Maneuver Ground in Kusu, Oita Prefecture, during a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) live-fire training exercise.

According to reports from the Ministry of Defense and local sources, an accident occurred when a shell suffered an abnormal rupture inside the barrel of a Type 10 tank. This explosion affected four members of the JGSDF Western Army Tank Regiment who were aboard the vehicle. Three male soldiers were confirmed dead, while one female soldier was injured but remains conscious and has been transported to a hospital.

Live ammunition was being used during the training session at the time of the incident. The Self-Defense Forces are currently investigating the precise cause and circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
