STARTO ENTERTAINMENT Launches "mimi-ni": A Free Podcast Service Revolutionizing Radio Listening with Unlimited Archives and Music

STARTO ENTERTAINMENT has launched a new free podcast service, "mimi-ni," allowing users to enjoy both music and talk, and it has quickly garnered significant attention on social media. With regular radio programs from across the country steadily beginning distribution, radio fans are already hailing it as "god content."

The biggest feature of "mimi-ni" is its ability to allow users to listen to missed or favorite episodes "forever" at any time, starting 8 days after the broadcast. Furthermore, it boasts an innovative function that plays the music aired during the program, potentially transforming the traditional radio listening experience.

Many users are comparing it to the existing radio streaming service, "radiko." While some comments suggest, "It's just a delayed version of radiko" or "It might not be very meaningful if you have an area-free subscription to radiko," there are also numerous positive opinions like, "It's great to be able to listen even after a week." In particular, for users who do not subscribe to radiko's area-free service, "mimi-ni" is highly valued as a free means to listen to programs outside their local area. However, radio stations have also voiced concerns that radiko listenership impacts program survival, emphasizing that "real-time listening (riatai) and listening via radiko remain crucial," which suggests a future differentiation between the services.

Upon its launch, numerous popular programs joined the distribution lineup. Programs featuring STARTO talents, such as King & Prince's Ren Nagase's "Niwa Raji," Snow Man's "Sunomama" (episodes featuring Hikaru Iwamoto and Tatsuya Fukazawa, etc.), Naniwa Danshi's "Uishin Raji!," Arashi's Masaki Aiba's "Recomen! Arashi Remix," timeles's "Recomen!," Ryota Miyadate's "Royal Salon," and "bay Janai ka," are already available for listening, prompting an outpouring of joy from fans. Features like "Oshi Doko Share" (share your favorite idol's segment) are also well-received.

Currently, feedback includes requests for app functionality rather than just browser-based use, a favorites registration feature, expansion of past archives, and the addition of specific programs (e.g., Yuya Takaki's YOU YAKAI, Miraji). Expectations are high for future functional and content enhancements.

"mimi-ni" is set to introduce a new way to enjoy radio programs, potentially bringing a fresh breeze to the radio industry.

The context

To fully appreciate the significance of "mimi-ni," it's helpful to understand a few key aspects of the Japanese entertainment and radio landscape:

  • STARTO ENTERTAINMENT: This agency is the successor to Johnny & Associates, a legendary talent agency that has managed many of Japan's most popular male idol groups for decades, including Arashi, King & Prince, Snow Man, and Naniwa Danshi. Their artists have an enormous and dedicated fanbase.
  • Japanese Idol Fandom and Radio: Radio programs are a crucial medium for Japanese idols to connect with their fans. They often feature personal talks, behind-the-scenes stories, and play their own music, fostering a strong sense of intimacy. Fans eagerly tune in to support their "oshi" (favorite idol or group member).
  • Radiko: This is the dominant existing radio streaming service in Japan. It offers a "timeshift" function allowing users to listen to broadcasts within a week of their original airtime, and an "area-free" paid subscription service to listen to stations outside one's geographical region. The comparison between "mimi-ni" and Radiko is therefore highly relevant to Japanese radio listeners.
  • "God Content" and "Riatai": "God content" (神コンテンツ, kami-contentsu) is a widely used term on social media to express extreme praise for something excellent. "Riatai" (リアタイ) is a portmanteau of "real-time" and refers to listening to a program live as it airs. The emphasis on "riatai" for radio stations highlights the importance of real-time listenership for maintaining broadcast ratings and, consequently, program longevity.
