Japan on Alert: Typhoon No. 9 Approaches as New Typhoon Looms

As of August 1, 2025, interest in weather information is rising across the Japanese archipelago due to the approach of Typhoon No. 9 and the forecast of a new typhoon forming south of the country.

Currently, Typhoon No. 9 is moving north near the Izu Islands, accompanied by gale-force winds. It is expected to approach the Kanto region tonight, bringing stronger winds and rain. However, on social media, comments like "It's hot this morning with no wind, despite Typhoon No. 9 being so close!" and "Another typhoon that won't make landfall... not much rain." are being seen, with some areas expressing concerns about insufficient rainfall.

Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced at 9 AM on the same day that a tropical depression developing southeast of Minamidaito Island is "expected to develop into a typhoon within 12 hours." As the next typhoon will be Typhoon No. 10, vigilance regarding its future path is necessary.

In response to this forecast of a new typhoon, numerous expressions of surprise and anxiety have emerged on social media, such as "No, no, no, no... please don't!" and "Another new typhoon is forecast, but it probably won't make landfall either..." Concerns are particularly high among those with travel or event plans, with comments like "Will flights be okay...?" and "Beware of Typhoon No. 10 on summer party day 2," drawing even more attention to future weather updates.

The context

Japan is highly susceptible to typhoons (tropical cyclones) during its summer and autumn months, which typically run from June to November. These powerful storms can bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and cause significant disruption to infrastructure, transportation, and daily life. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is the official body responsible for monitoring and issuing warnings for these weather phenomena. Typhoons are numbered sequentially each year as they form. The Izu Islands are an archipelago south of mainland Honshu, part of Tokyo. The Kanto region is the largest plain in Japan, encompassing the Greater Tokyo Area. Minamidaito Island is a remote island in Okinawa Prefecture, located southeast of Okinawa Main Island.
