Major Gacha Overhaul Coming to Blue Archive: New Systems Spark Debate Among Players
On the official X (formerly Twitter) account for the mobile game Blue Archive, developers announced a major overhaul of the student recruitment (gacha) system starting after maintenance on July 29. With the retirement of the long-standing "Recruitment Points" system, new mechanics titled "Recruitment Charge" and "Recruitment Count Bonuses" will be introduced, sparking intense discussion among players (referred to as "Senseis").
Immediately following the announcement, the term "Recruitment Charge" began trending on social media. While there is anticipation for the new system, many players have expressed anxiety and confusion regarding its specific rules. A major point of debate is that accumulated charges will reset the moment a featured pickup student is drawn, and that charges will be managed separately for standard and limited-time banners. Players are expressing concern over losing built-up charges midway through a recruitment spree if a pickup student appears early.
This change is expected to significantly affect double-pickup (WPU) banners, where two featured students run simultaneously. Previously, players could pull until 200 attempts; if they obtained one student along the way, they could use their 200 accumulated Recruitment Points to guaranteed-select ("spark") the second student. Under the new system, getting a featured character early resets the charge, which players worry will increase the cost and burden of securing both students. Concerns that the system is incompatible with double banners and provides less safety for unlucky pulls are widely shared.
On the other hand, some analysts suggest reserving judgment until full details are revealed, noting that overall opinion may change depending on whether charges carry over across banner periods and what items or Divine Fragments (Elephs) are awarded through the "Recruitment Count Bonuses." Some optimistic players hope that increased rates at 100 or 200 pull milestones could make recruiting easier. Ultimately, whether this revamp is a true improvement or a setback will depend on the final implementation details on July 29.
The Context
Blue Archive is a popular tactical role-playing mobile game developed by Nexon Games and published by Yostar in Japan. Players take on the role of a teacher ("Sensei") guiding armed high school students through various combat missions in an anime-style setting. In gacha games, players spend in-game currency or real money for a chance to recruit characters. Up until now, Blue Archive used a standard "sparking" system where 200 pulls gave 200 points, allowing players to directly pick a banner student of their choice. Because changes to core gacha mechanics directly impact player spending and character collection strategies, major updates to these mechanics always draw heavy scrutiny from the community.
