Toei Announces New Tokusatsu Series 'Kakusei Hunter Omega Horn' for Summer 2026
Toei has announced that Kakusei Hunter Omega Horn, the second installment in its new tokusatsu (special effects) franchise "PROJECT R.E.D.," will premiere on the TV Asahi network on July 26, 2026. Along with the announcement, Toei released the main visual, a teaser promotional video, and revealed the five main cast members, including lead actor Hijiri Narahara, sparking immense buzz across social media.
Many tokusatsu fans expressed surprise at the news that the project's first installment, Super Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity, would wrap up after only a six-month run (two quarters, or "cours"). While some voiced disappointment, saying, "It’s sad to see Gavan end in just half a year" and "It’s too short-lived," anticipation for the upcoming series has quickly skyrocketed.
Kakusei Hunter Omega Horn centers around a unique "hunter battle" concept featuring mismatched buddy pairings of humans and giant "Horned Beasts" (known as Kakuju). According to newly released setting materials like the "Horned Beast Encyclopedia," the show will feature powerful and highly intelligent beasts, such as "Zetsuenkaku" (played/voiced by Eito), who will engage in dynamic battles. Aligned with PROJECT R.E.D.’s core concept of "different worlds crossing dimensions," the new series also hints at potential crossovers with its predecessor, as well as highly anticipated toy and merchandise tie-ins.
Social media reactions to the show's distinctive universe and bold character designs, including "Captain Omega Horn," have been highly varied. The human-beast partnership has drawn comparisons to popular gaming franchises like Monster Hunter and Pokémon, with fans commenting, "This looks incredibly exciting," and "Having such an unconventional concept makes it feel like a truly fresh hero." While some fans expressed hesitation over whether the designs border on being a bit quirky or "tacky," the general consensus is excitement for a series that promises to breathe new life into the tokusatsu genre.
The Context
For decades, Japanese tokusatsu (live-action special effects) television, dominated by iconic franchises like Kamen Rider and Super Sentai (the basis for Power Rangers), has traditionally followed a year-long broadcasting schedule of around 45 to 50 episodes. Toei’s "PROJECT R.E.D." represents a modern departure from this norm, opting for shorter, multi-series seasonal blocks. The first entry, Super Space Sheriff Gavan Infinity, revived the classic "Metal Hero" character Gavan, making its quick transition to the brand-new Omega Horn after just six months a major surprise for traditional fans. By blending monster-collecting and hunting tropes popular in modern gaming with classic superhero action, Toei is actively attempting to capture a younger generation of viewers and expand its global merchandising appeal.
