World's First Pokémon-Themed Airport to Launch in Ishikawa in 2026

Ishikawa Prefecture's Noto Airport (Noto Satoyama Airport) is set for a massive transformation, becoming the first facility in the world to officially bear the Pokémon name. The new nickname will be "Noto Satoyama Pokémon with YOU Airport," with its grand opening scheduled for July 7, 2026, coinciding with the Tanabata (Star Festival).

The highlight of this renovation is an immersive display featuring "Flying-type" Pokémon, perfectly suited for an aviation hub. All 111 species of Flying-type Pokémon discovered as of May 2026 (excluding Mega Evolutions and regional forms) will be featured throughout the facility, creating an experience fans won't want to miss.

Social media has been buzzing since the announcement, with fans expressing high expectations. Comments like "Flying-type enthusiasts absolutely must go!" and "The whole airport looks like a dream theme park" have flooded platforms. The project also plans to install a massive Pikachu balloon, offer limited-edition menu items, and sell exclusive airport merchandise, significantly boosting its appeal as a travel destination.

While some users pointed out that Pikachu itself is not a Flying-type, others noted its resemblance to the iconic "Flying Pikachu" of the past, while most simply welcomed the presence of the franchise's mascot. With other landmarks like the Milotic-themed Pokémon Center in Kanazawa, Ishikawa is increasingly being recognized by fans as a "Pokémon Holy Land."

This project is a limited-time initiative running until September 30, 2029. It is expected to serve as a major pillar for tourism promotion and reconstruction support for the Noto Peninsula, drawing fans from both Japan and overseas.

The context

Noto Airport is the primary gateway to the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. The region was hit by a major earthquake on January 1, 2024, which caused significant damage to the airport and the surrounding communities. This collaboration with The Pokémon Company is part of the "Pokémon with YOU" initiative, a disaster relief project launched after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake to bring smiles to children in disaster-affected areas. By turning the airport into a global attraction, officials hope to revitalize the local economy and support long-term recovery efforts.
