Tochigi Robbery-Homicide: Mastermind Couple Arrested After Fleeing with Infant Daughter

A major development has occurred in the robbery-homicide case in Kaminokawa, Tochigi Prefecture. On the 17th, police arrested a 28-year-old man believed to be the mastermind and his 25-year-old wife. This brings the total number of arrests to six, including four 16-year-old boys who allegedly carried out the crime.

Reports indicate that the husband, Kaito Takemae, was apprehended at Haneda Airport while attempting to flee the country. Meanwhile, his wife, Miyu, was found hiding in a business hotel in Kanagawa Prefecture with their 7-month-old daughter. The bizarre and tragic sight of a couple attempting to escape the law while carrying an infant has sent shockwaves through society.

On social media, the couple has faced a wave of anger and sorrow. Users have voiced criticisms such as "What were they thinking as parents?" and "This is beyond tragic." The selfish actions of the masterminds—who attempted to flee to protect themselves while leaving the minor perpetrators behind—have become a particular focal point of public condemnation.

The 7-month-old daughter, whose relatives could not be reached, has been taken into the care of a child guidance center. The baby, suddenly burdened with a harsh fate due to her parents' arrest, has become a symbol of the dark depths of this case. Police are currently investigating the full extent of the couple's involvement and how they directed the teenagers.

The context

In recent years, Japan has seen a rise in "Yami-Baito" (dark part-time jobs), where individuals—often minors or young adults—are recruited through social media or encrypted messaging apps to perform illegal acts like robberies or fraud for quick cash. These crimes are typically orchestrated by "directors" (shijiyaku) who stay in the shadows to avoid detection. This case has drawn significant attention because it involves the arrest of these alleged masterminds and highlights the disturbing trend of adults exploiting teenagers to commit high-risk violent crimes while prioritizing their own escape from the law.
