Underdog Odilon Stuns Field, Captures First Dirt Grade Title in DioLite Memorial

On March 11, at Funabashi Racecourse, Odilon (7-year-old male), belonging to Hyogo Prefecture, achieved a splendid victory in the JpnII 71st DioLite Memorial, a dirt grade race, overturning its 7th favorite status. Partnered with jockey Tomohiro Yoshimura, it outmaneuvered strong horses from the Japan Racing Association (JRA) to achieve its first-ever dirt grade race victory.

Odilon, which raced from the middle of the pack, showcased a brilliant burst of speed in the final straight. It edged out the 3rd favorite Seraphic Call just before the finish line, with Seraphic Call finishing second and the 2nd favorite Kaz Tanjeur in third. This victory also marked a historic win for jockey Tomohiro Yoshimura, as it was a dirt grade triumph with a locally-affiliated horse.

Odilon, a first-crop progeny of sire Kitasan Black, had been noted for its potential since its time with JRA, but its talent has truly blossomed since transferring to local racing. This victory follows its win in the Kochi Governor's Prize, marking consecutive graded wins and leading to its first dirt grade title. Its record since the transfer is 5 wins in 7 starts, truly demonstrating a 'highly successful transfer'.

This unexpected outcome sparked surprise and excitement among horse racing fans. Comments like 'Odilon won?!', 'I can't believe it came in first!', and 'Who is this Odilon, winning as a local horse?' flooded social media, making the 7th favorite's major upset a big topic. Some handicappers and fans had even recommended it, proving its undeniable ability.

Attention is now focused on Odilon's future movements. Further leaps are expected, such as a challenge in the Kawasaki Kinen, and it is poised to become a star of local horse racing, invigorating the dirt racing scene.

The context

The DioLite Memorial (ダイオライト記念) is a significant Grade II dirt race (JpnII) held annually at Funabashi Racecourse, drawing formidable competitors from both the Japan Racing Association (JRA) and local regional circuits (地方競馬, Chiho Keiba). A victory by a local horse over JRA-affiliated horses in such a high-profile event is a rare and celebrated achievement, as JRA horses often boast superior resources and pedigree. Kitasan Black (キタサンブラック), Odilon's sire, was a celebrated champion in JRA racing, known for his multiple G1 victories and immense popularity, making his progeny's success particularly noteworthy. Jockey Tomohiro Yoshimura is a highly respected figure in regional racing, and his triumph with a local horse in a national dirt grade race further solidifies his reputation.
