On the morning of December 5th, a 58-year-old female employee was fatally stabbed by a Chinese male colleague at a company in Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture.

According to the police, shortly after 9:30 AM on the same day, a 58-year-old woman at a company in Isumi City was stabbed multiple times in the face and neck with a bladed weapon. She was transported to a hospital but was later confirmed dead. Following the incident, police apprehended Liu Ke (39), a Chinese national and colleague believed to have stabbed the woman, on suspicion of attempted murder. At the time of the arrest, it was reported that the woman and Liu were in a meeting.

The incident has caused a significant stir on social media, with numerous posts expressing sentiments like 'Chinese crime again?' and 'Foreigner crime is increasing.' Many opinions have also been shared, questioning Japan's system for accepting foreign workers and its immigration control policies. Alongside expressions of condolence for the deceased woman, there are growing calls for an investigation into the background and causes of the incident.

The Context

Japan is grappling with a rapidly aging population and a shrinking workforce, leading to an increasing reliance on foreign laborers across various industries. While foreign residents play a crucial role in supporting the economy, their growing presence has also ignited public debates concerning immigration policies, cultural integration, and public safety. Violent incidents involving foreign nationals, though statistically not necessarily disproportionate, often amplify existing anxieties and trigger discussions on social media regarding foreign crime rates and the effectiveness of immigration controls. This specific incident, involving a Chinese national, has tapped into these broader societal conversations about foreign labor acceptance and immigration management in Japan, leading to calls for stricter measures and a review of current policies.
